var intro         = '<br><br><br>Grayshotts St Joseph\'s........<br><br><br>.................in a quiet corner of this  Catholic churchyard lies over 90 Canadian soldiers whose final resting place is so far from home.<br><br><br>These images were taken by C Hutchinson on a visit to Hampshire in May of 2008.  I have added the information regarding each of those men.<br><br>While adding the information about each soldier I was surprised by how small these men were both in height and stature. These men are no longer just names on a headstone in a quiet churchyard but men who had families, occupations and ultimately paid the supreme sacrifice.';

Walk around the back of the crucifix to visit one small patch of land that is forever Canadian', 'The wooden crucifix mounted atop of tiered bricks stands guard over the three rows of Candian men in St Joseph\'s churchyard, Grayshott.  The tablet near the base  informs that this memorial was erected by Canadian Comrades and Friends.', 'Private 334393, Gasik, P of the Canadian Engineers who died on 1st February 1919.  Paul Gasik lived in Detroit but was born on 8th March 1890 in Poland.  According to official papers he worked as a boilermaker and his father Nicholas was his next of kin - Nicholas at the time of Paul\'s enlistment on 10th May 1917, was still living in Poland.  Paul signed in a very confident hand when joining the military. Paul was 5\' 7\" with blue eyes, a fair complexion and dark brown hair.  He had 20/20 vision and good hearing and a chest measurement of 36\" with 3\" expansion.  His religion was that of Roman Catholic.', 'Private, 3321505, Delaire, A of the 6th Reserve Btn Canadian Inf., who died on 1st February 1919.  Adolard Delaire of Merton St, Ottawa, was born on 26 May 1895, a single man working as a teamster whose next of kin was his father Frank of St Patrick St, Ottawa.  Adolard attended a medical examimation of 21st May 1918 where he was found to be 5\' 5\" tall, with blue eyes, medium light complexion and light brown hair.  He also has a scar on his right wrist and a scar on his right eyebrow.  He did not sign his name when enlisting just made his mark', 'Private 862085, Pennylegion, Wm E of the 7th Bn Canadian Inf died on 31st January 1919.  William Edward was born on 13th October 1884,  the son of Albert and Catharine Pennylegion of Toronto, but his next of kin was Mary, his wife who lived at Oak St, Toronto.  Wm worked as a tailor prior to his enlistment on 31st January 1916 where he  signed his allegiance to the King.  William was 5\' 5 ¼ \" tall, with a 36\" chest and 3\" expansion, he had a sallow complexion, brown eyes and black hair. ', 'Private 877230,  McPherson, J who died on 25 January 1919 aged 24.  John was born in Bridgeport and resided there at his enlistment.  John, a miner,  was born on 28th of September 1894,  the son of Angus and Annie of Bridgeport Mines, NS.  John, on his enlistment papers dated 9th March 1916 gave his father as next of kin.  John attended a medical in Sydney NS and was found to be fit.  Also on his papers his description is given as :- 5\' 6\" with an expanded chest of 38 with a 9\" range of expansion.  He had a sallow complexion, hazel eyes and dark brown hair and a weight of 158 lbs', 'Private 3183380, Carter J of the 17th Reserve Btn Canadian Inf.  John was born on 3rd September 1898 in Reserve Mines, CB.  John enlisted after a medical examination in Sydney, CB on 23rd of May 1918 aged 19.  John gave his next of kin as William Martin, father.  John was 5\' 5 ½\" tall with a fully expanded chest of 35\" and an expansion range of 1½ \".  He had a medium complexion, gray eyes and brown hair.', 'Private 320868, Garneau, C who served in the Quebec Regiment of the Canadian Infantry and died on 11 January 1919.  ', 'Private 904706, Azzalini, A who died on 1st February 1919 aged 32.  Aristide ( or Harry as found on his attestation papers) was  born on 16th May 1886, the son of Agostino and Maria (nee Furlan) of Osigo di Fregona, Italy.  When Harry enlisted in Edmonton he stated that his next of kin was Mary, his mother of Vittono (?), Italy.  Harry worked as a coalminer and enlisted on 17th March 1916.  Harry was aged 29 when enlisting, 5\' 10½\" tall, with a fully expanded chest of 39\" and a range of 4\" expansion.  He had a medium complexion, brown eyes and dark hair.', 'Private 123109, Norelius, C who died on 11th December 1918.  Clarence Norelius was born on 22nd June 1889 in Shanghai, China.  On his attestation papers his next of kin is put simply as Mr Norelius (father) of 10 North Szechuen Road, Shanghai.  Clarence worked as a seaman in civilian life, a single man he enlisted on 3rd September 1915 and signed his allegiance on that date in Windsor, Ontario.  At his medical he is reported to be 26 years old, 5\' 9¾\" tall with a chest fully expanded of 35½\".  He had dark complexion, hazel eyes and dark brown hair with two distinguishing moles on his forehead.  His religion is given as C of E, unlike the majority of casualties in Grayshott who are  Roman Catholic', 'Private 3280323, Labrecque, J E of the 10th Reserves Btn, Canadian Infantry who died on 2nd December 1918 aged 21.  Joseph Eduard was born on 30th May 1897 in Limoilou, Quebec.  By the time of the war Joseph, a carpenter had married Yvonne Demeules who lived at 130 5th Rue Limoilou, Quebec.  Joseph enlisted in Quebec on 17th of May 1918, just before his 21st birthday.  He was 5\' 7½\" tall, with a chest fully expanded of 34\".  He had a dark complexion, brown eyes and  brown hair with no distinguishing marks.', 'Private, 3232767, Flanagan, G E of the 8th Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry (Central Ontario Regt), who died on 30th November 1918 . George Edward Flanagan was born on 21st June 1882, Prince Edward Island, the son of Patrick, who was cited as his next of kin.  At the time of his enlistment George was living with his father at 3352 S, Irving Ave, Chicago where he worked as a reinforced ironworker and was unmarried.  George signed his declaration on 9th March 1918 in Toronto with a very flambouyant hand.  George Edward gave his age as 35.  He was measured at 5\' 5\" tall with a fully expanded girth of 34\" and a 3\" range of expansion, his complexion was dark and he had brown eyes and black hair.', 'Private 3172631, Coursol, E of the 10th Reserve Btn who died on 28th November 1918.  Eugene Coursol was born on the 15th of Juky (as on attestation papers) 1896 in Lachine, the son of Damas and Julienne.  On the 1901 census the families surname is listed as Caurrol and Eugene can  be found with his father, a master plumber, his mother  and four siblings and two non family members.  When Eugene made his decloration on 27th August 1918, he signed in a hand with flambouyant initial letters.    He was 22 years old and 5\' 6\" tall with a 34 \" chest, fair complexion, blue eyes and fair hair.', 'Private 3170680, Linteau, A who served in the 10th Reserve Btn. Canadian Infantry and died on 17th November 1918 aged 25.  In 1901 Arthur was living with his widowed mother Rose and his siblings.  The census also states that the family are of Irish origin.  When Arthur enlisted on 29th July 1918, his next of kin was his mother who was now Mde Rose Paradis of 187 Dorion St, Montreal.  His enlistment papers stated he was born on August 26th 1892 in Montreal, a single man working as a chauffour ( as spelt ).  He was 26 years old, 5\" 4½\" tall, with a medium complexion, brown eyes and brown hair.', 'Private 317620, Fournier, T served in the 10th Reserve Btn of the Canadian Infantry.  Thomas was born on 23rd February 189* in St Bazile Madawasga and worked as a labourer and was unmarried.  When he enlisted in Montreal on 9th October 1918 he was living in the same area as his birth and gave his brother George as next of kin.  His medical gives his height of 5\' 5¼\" and a chest expanded of 37\" with a range of expansion of 2½\".  He had a brown complexion, brown eyes and brown hair with good eyesight and hearing.  He also stated that he was of the Roman Catholic persuasion.', 'Private 478022, Withrow, W who served in the Royal Canadian Regt., and died on 13 November 1918 aged 40.  Thomas was the son of Stephen and Kate who in 1901 were living at 36 Foss Terrace, Streatham, London.  Where the census states that Stephen was a Housekeeper and Corset (Stay) Packer aged 45 and born in Fenstanton, Huntingdonshire.  His wife, Kate was born in Tipperary - as was William in 1879. By the time peace was declared Stephen and Kate were living in Wimbledon.  William enlisted in the Canadian Army on 23rd August 1915, giving his next of kin as St Witherow of 17 Havelock Road, Wimbledon, London.  William worked as a labourer and giving his marital status as single.  He also declared that he had previously served for 18 years and 206 days in the 1st Btn Duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry where he saw service in South Africa.  He had his medical signed on 24 August 1915 where he was confirmed as being 5\' 7½\" tall a chest expanded of 38\", fair hair, hazel eyes and brown hair and no distinguishing marks.', 'Private 3169014, LaFrance, J who served in the 10th Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry and died on  12 November 1918.  James was birn i 12th March 1899 the son of Charles La France who lived at Thetford Mines.  James worked as a labourer and stated he was single.  James was 5\' 4½\" tall with a fully expanded chest of 31½\" .  He had a clear complexion, grey eyes and brown hair.', 'Private 4030381, Barr F who served in the 23rd Reserve Btn of the Canadian Infantry and died on 13 November 1918.  Fred lived in Huntingdon, Quebec with his wife Malandie.   Fred\'s Attestation Papers say that he was a Defaulter, Never Registered.  This means that Fred never registered under Proclomation, and that should be stated on his papers along with the date of apprehension or surrender - in Fred\'s case there are no dates.  Fred was approx. 25 years old, 5\' 4\" tall with an expanded chest of 33\" and a 3\" range.  He had a dark complexion, blue eyes and dark hair.  He made his mark in Montreal on 11th November 1917 and his mark was witness by Harold Davison ?', 'Private 3168994, Vigneux, A who served in the 10th Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry and died on 3rd November 1918.  Alfred was born on 26th May 1897 the son of Henri  and Delima (?)  of Roxton Falls, Quebec.  He worked as a labour and was unmarried when he enlisted in Montreal on 22nd July 1918.   Alfred was 5\' 6\" tall with a fully expanded chest of 22. He had brown complexion, blue eyes and fair hair.', 'Private 3171346, Ferland, A of the 10th Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry who died on 7th November 1918.  Alphonse Ferland was the son of Jean and Celestine of St Pierre, Montmorencey.  Alphonse was a single man and working as a baker upon enlistment, but he had never registered under Proclomation.  His next of kin was his father, Jean when he was drafted in 1918.  He was 5\' 1\" tall with a chest expanded of 34\", fair complexion, blue eyes and fair hair.', 'Private 3208278, Moon D C of the 21st Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry who died on 7th November 1918 aged 23.  Daniel Charles Moon was the son of James R and Elizabeth Moon who lived in Didsbury, Alberta formerly of Cazenovia, Winsconsin.  David was born on 6th April 1895 and by the time of his enlistment he attested he was a farmer and a single man and his next of kin was his mother, Elizabeth.  He was 5\' 11\" tall, with a fair complexion, blue eyes and light brown hair', 'Private 3212948, Bugeia, F who served in the 21st Reserve Btn of the Canadian Infantry and died on 5th November 1918', 'Private 3210535, Lenner, George Peter who served in the 21st Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry who died on 5th November 1918 aged 22.  George was born on 30th May 1896 in Webster, Minnesota, USA the son of John and Mary who by the time of peace lived in Spring Lake, Alberta.  When he was drafted he stated he was single and a farmer and his next of kin was his father.  George was 22 years old and 5\' 8\" with an expanded chest of 38\" and a 5\" range.  He had a dark complexion and brown eyes and hair.', 'Private 3210577, Bernard, George Odilon who served n the 21st Reserve Btn of the Canadian Infantry and died on 4th November 1918 aged 32.  George Dillon Bernard ( as he was on his draft papers ) was born on 20th May 1896 ( but this date does not match with his age at death and should read 1886).  He was born in Peill, P Q or St Antoine, River Richelieu, P Q - two sources and both differ.  His next of was given as Alexander Bernard his father.  One source gives his parents as Alexandre and Hermina Lamoureux, his wife who lived in Rhode Island.  George at the time of his call up was a Pool and Billiard Parlour Proprietor and a single man.  He undertook his medical in Calgary on 20 May 1918 and was found to be 5\' 5\" tall, with an expanded chest of 38\", fair complexion, brown eyes and hair.', 'Private, 3170550, Morin A who served in the 10th Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry and died on 5th November 1918.  Alphonse Morin was born on 27th February 1896 in St Hilarion Co., the son of Simon Morin of Shaw Falls.  Alphonse undertook a medical examimation which showed he was 5\'6\" tall, with a fully expanded chest of 35\".  He had  a medium complexion, grey eyes and fair hair.', 'Gunner 3085204, Murphy, T. R who served in the Canadian Field Artillery and died on 29th October 1918 aged 25.  Thomas Ross, born on 12th November 1894 was the son of Willin & Hannah Murphy and in the 1901 census had four siblings.  Willin worked as a City Fireman - both parents being born in Canada but from Irish ancestry.  Thomas worked as a clerk before his \'call up\'.  He attended a medical on 1st May 1918 where he was found to be 5\' 8\" tall, a 33½\".  He had a fair complexion, brown eyes and fair hair.', 'Private, Johnston, F L, 3180118 served in the 17th Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry and died on 31st October 1918 aged 21.  Fred Louis was the son of Thomas H and Georgeina Johnston of Lower East Pubrico, Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia. His attestation papers say that he was single and working as a fisherman and a Catholic.  He was 20 years old, 5\' 6\" tall and had a 33\" chest, medium complection, brown eyes and light brown hair and signed in a precise hand.', 'Private Carty, D 310880 served in the 8th Reserve Btn, Canadian Infantry and died on 31st October 1918.  David was the son of Mrs Mary Carty, who he gave as his next of kin.  His attestation papers state he was a single man working as a farmer and living at 262 Wellington St, N Hamilton, Canada.  David died on 31st October 1918.  David was 28 years old when he enlisted and 5\' 5½\" tall with a 37 \" chest.  He had a fair complection, blue eyes and dark hair.', 'Private Lorrain, L 3155740 served in the 10th Reserve Btn, Canadian Infantry died on 31st October 1918 aged 33.  Louis was the son of Martin and Rozlin .', 'Sapper Payer, J 3287810 served in the Canadian Engineers and died on 30th October 1918.  Joseph on his attestation papers stated he was a single man working as a brake-man on the railroad.  He was born on 8th May 1897 and his next of kin was his father, Arthur of Shawanigan, St Maurice, P Q Canada.  Joseph, himself lived at Grand Mere, Champlain, P Q Canada.  Joseph was 21 when he enlisted, 5\' 6¾\" tall and a 38\" chest.  He had midium ( as in papers ) complection, brown hair and eyes.', 'Private Mc Donald, Laughlin (or Laughlan as found on his attestation papers ) 3181225 served in the 17th Reserve Btn, Canadian Infantry died on 30th October 1918 aged 23.  Laughlin was the son of John and Mary Ann of Leitche\'s Creek, Cape Breton Co., Nova Scotia.  He was born on 23rd March 1895 according to his papers.  He also stated he was a single man working as a farmer.  His mother was given as his next of kin.  Laughlin was 23 years old when he was medically examined and found to be 6\' ½\" tall with a light complection, brown eyes and light hair.  He made his mark and this was witnessed by Sgt. Elmer Farmer ?', 'Private 3211648, Bruneau, J served in the 21st Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry (Alberta Regt) and died on 28th October 1918.  Joseph was the son of Ephrem Bruneau of Vegreville, Alberta and worked as a farmer and mechanic.  He attested in Calgary where he was found to be 22 years of age, 5\' 6½\" tall with a 37\" chest.  He had a ****** complection, brown eyes and light brown hair.', 'Private 3171685, Chouinard, V served in the 10th Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry and died on 30th October 1918.  Victor was born on April 25th 1890.  Victor on his attestation papers gave his address as 704 Panet St, Montreal where he gave his next of kin as his mother Louisa Simpson and his occupation as that of carpenter.  Victor was aged 26 when he signed his papers in a very confident hand and was described as 5\' 2¾\" tall with brown hair, brown eyes and hair.', 'Private 3039619, Murray A, served in the 10th Reserve Btn, Canadian Infantry and died on 29th October 1918 aged 32.  He was born on 15th October 1886 in Quebec, the son of Francois Murray and Louise Gagnon, his wife of Masson, Quebec,  Amede was a single man working as a minner ( as per official documents) who gave his mother as his next of kin.  Amede was 31 when he attended his medical and was found to be 5\' 6½\" tall with a medium complection, brown eyes and medium hair.  Amede made his mark on his papers and this was witnessed by a Sergt,m', 'Lance Corporal 145112 Blais, E served in the 22nd Btn Canadian Infantry who died on 27th October 1918 aged 24.  Eusebe was the son of Odilon and Theotise pf St Godfroy ( St Godfris), Quebec.  He was born on 10th August 1894 and worked as a labourer.  Euseve was 21 years old when he enlisted in 1915.  He was found to be 5\' 8\" tall with a dark complection and brown hair and eyes.', 'Private 3206922, Keating R H, served in the 21st Reserve Bn Canadian Inf. and died on 24th October 1918 aged 31.  Richard Harry was born  on 16th March 1885 in Bruce Co., Ontario, the son of Patrick and Mary Keating.  Richard worked before his \'call up\' as a locomotive engineer and drig line operator and he gave his next of kin as his sister Mrs Kate Leneham.  When he attended his medical in Calgary he was found to be 32 year and 11 months old  on 26th February 1918 ( note: his age on his headstone is 31).  His height was said to be 5\' 8½\" with a chest of 34\".  Richard had a sallow complection with gray eyes and black hair and he signed his name in a good hand', 'Prive 3281011, Cimon A C served in the 1oth Reserve Bn. Canadian Infantry and died on 22nd October 1918 aged 21.   Joseph Arthur Cimon was born on 11th December 1898 in Maine, U.S., the son of Ulric Cimon ( next of kin) and Rose Anna Fontaine his wife.  Joseph worked as a painter.  His attestation papers stated that he was 21 years and 6 months old and 5\' 5\" with a 34\" chest, fair complection, blue eyes and brown hair.  Joseph signed his papers in a very confident and mature hand.', 'Private 4040224, Thibault, A served in the 5th Canadian Mounted Rifles and died on 21st February 1919.  Adelard Thibault was born on 22nd Avril (April) 1894 in St Felix de Cap Rouge, P O, Canada the son of Lazare Thibault.  Adelard worked as a labourer before \'joining up\' in Feruary of 1918.  Adelard was 24 years 8 months when he signed up and 5\' 5\" tall with a 37\" chest. He had a dark complection, hazel eyes and brown hair and signed his papers with a hand that could be described as childlike. ', 'Private 3030602, Hurley J served in the 8th Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry and died on 26 February 1918.  John Hurley was born on 15th June 1876 in Waterford City, Ireland. On his attestation papers Ralph told that he had previously served 10 mois (months) in 6th Regt COA.  Ralph was 21 years 7 months when he attended a medical and found to be 5\' 5\" tall, a chest of 35½\", a medium complection and grey eyes and brown hair. Ivor Daniel, Canadian Chaplain Service died 26 April 1963', 'Sapper 3088848, Hall A O served in the Canadian Engineers and died on 12th June 1919.  Archie Ovide Hall was born on 26th March 1897 in Stanhope, Quebec, the son of David Hall.  On his attestation papers David was given as Archie\'s next of kin.  Archie worked as a farmer and was 21 years and 4 months old, 5\' 3½\" in height with a 36½\" chest, a medium complection, brown eyes and medium brown hair. Archie signed his name in a good hand.', 'Driver 43894, Leary P served in the Canadian Field Artillery and died on 24th March 1919.  Patrick Leary was born on 20th October 1891 in Whitburn Newfoundland.  On his attestation papers for the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force he gave his occupation as that of coalminer and his next of kin as Miss Annie Leary of North River.  Patrick stated that he was 22 years and 10 months old, 5\' 2\" tall with a 38\" chest.  He also had a dark complection, brown eyes and black hair with no distinguishing marks', 'Private 439535, Gagnon C J, MM who served in the Canadian Infantry and died on 9th March 1919 aged 27.  Charles Joseph Gagnon was born on 19th November 1892 in Keewatin, Ontario, the son of Joseph and Victoria Gagnon.  Charles worked as a labourer before his enlistment and stated his next of kin as his father.  Charles was 22 years 8 months old, 5\' 4½\" tall with a chest of 36½\".  He had a dark complection, brown eyes and black hair and signed in a very confident way.   ', 'Sapper 685035,  Hibaluik O served in the Canadian Engineers and died on 10th February 1919.  Ouilian Hibaluik was born on 8th (?) Nay 1889 in Volinsk,Guberney, Russia but lived at 2001 W 17th St, Cleveland, Ohio, U.S. Ouilian gave his next of kin as Milania (?) Hibaluik who lived in Volinsk, Guberney, Russia.  He stated he was married, working as a labourer and never served in any Military Force before and signed in a very good hand.  Ouilian gave his age as 27 years and 6 months and 5# 7½\" tall.  He had a chest of 37\", fair complection, blue eyes and light brown hair and no distinguishing marks.  He gave his religious denomination as Greek Orthodox.  The Medical Examiner considered him \'fit\' on 4th November 1916 in Windsor, Ontario', 'Private 3032230, Higgins J P served in the 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles and died on 23rd February 1919 aged 34.  Joseph Patrick Higgins was born on 16th March 1894 in Guelph, Ontario the son of James and Margaret who lived at 61 Northcote Ave, Toronto.  Joseph was single and therefore gave his mother, Margaret as his  next of kin on his draft papers in 1917.  Joseph was 5\' 10\" tall, with a chest of 38\", medium complection, blue eyes and brown hair and he signed in a good hand.', 'Private 46494 Jackson, R served in the Canadian Army Service Corps and died on 16th February 1919 aged 24. Richard left a widow Margaret, of 113A Debiencourt, Villa-Emard, Montreal.  Richard was 5\' 9\" tall with a fully expanded chest of 36 ½\".  He had a dark complection, brown eyes and black hair', 'Private 3030727, Ryan G E served in the 8th Reserve Bn, Canadian Infantry and died on 16th February 1919 aged 27.   George Eathen Ryan was born on 9th May 1891 in the USA, the son of Thomas Peter and Bridget Lena Ryan of North Dana, Mass., USA.  He was employed as a steam fitter when he enlisted in 1917 and stated he was  a single man.  George gave a William R Burk of 128 Holland St, Boston as his next of kin on his attestation papers.   George was 5\' 5¾\" tall with a fully expanded chest of 34½\", he had a dark complection and brown eyes and hair.  He also had a scar on his forehead.', 'Private 3035940 Clarke, F H served in the 12th Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry and died on 12th February 1919 aged 27.  Francis Henry Clark was born on 6th December 1891 in Rama, Ontario the son of Patrick and Maria Clarke.  Francis worked as a farmer and on his enlistment papers he gave his mother Maria, as his next of kin. He signed his papers in a sloping hand. In 1915 when Patrick enlisted he was 5\' 9\" tall with a 36\" chest, he had a fresh complection, hazel eyes and dark brown hair and weighed 145lbs', 'Serjeant 1021066 Proulx, J P served in the 33rd Btn Canadian Infantry and died on 2nd January 1918.  Joseph Phileas Proulx was born on 1 November 1883 in St Biniface, Manitoba and by the time of his enlistment he was a married man - giving his wife, Ann as next of kin.  He worked as a clerk  and signed his papers in a rustic hand.  Joseph was 5\' 7\" tall with a 41\" chest, fair hair, blue eyes and dark brown hair', 'Private 2393432 Wilce G T served in the 12th Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry and died on 24th March 1918.  George Thomas Wilce was born on 31st January 1882 in Aberdeen, his mother Mary Ann being given as his next of kin as he was separated from his wife.  At the time of his enlistment George was living at 311 West Harris St, Savannah, Georgia, USA and worked as an iron worker.  He had previously served in the Imp. A.M.C. as a private for 2 months.  George was 5\' 5\" tall with a 34\" chest.  He had a medium complection, light blue eyes and light brown hair.  He had a scar on his left heel and other notes show that his teeth had bad roots but his throat was ok, his hearing was good and his nose septum deflected to left.        NOTE :-  he nasal septum separates the left and right passages in the nose, dividing the two nostrils', 'Gunner 2643870 McInnis J J served in the Canadian Artillery and died on 3rd April 1918.  John James McInnis was born on 23rd June 1899 in Charlottetown Canada, the son of James McInnis, whom he gave as next of kin.  John worked as a florist and lived with his parents at 30 Upper Queen St, Charlottetown.  He stated that he belong to the Active Militia and signed his papers in a confident hand.  John was 18 years 3 months old when he enlisted and 5\' 6¾\" in height with a 36¼\" chest.  He had a ruddy complection, blue eyes and brown hair.  He had 4 warty moles on back of neck with three on his right side and one on his left ', 'Private 660439 Taillon, C E served in the 10th Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry and died on 20th October 1917 aged 27.  Charles Edouard Taillon was born on 4 September 1890.  At the time of his enlistment he resided at 506 Napoleon St, Montreal with his wife Antoinette Boisseau Taillon.  He gave his occupation as that of Siggar\'s Teacher.  Charles was 5\' 8¼\" tall with a 38\" chest.  He had a brown complection, brown eyes and dark hair.  He had a mole on his left shoulder.', 'Private 1051625 Boyer, H served in the 15th Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry and died on 9th September 1917 aged 23.  On his Attestation papers he is listed as Harry Boyer but on other sources he is Hormidas Boyer.  He born on 11th January 1894 in Duck Lane, Sask.,  the son of John C Boyer and his wife Angele Ouelette.  At the time of his enlistment he was living at Springbourne, Sask., and working as a labourer.  Harry was 5\' 9 ¼\" tall with a 36\" chest, he had a dark complection, grey eyes and black hair with no distinguishing marks.', 'Company Sergeant Major 63945 Walker C served in the Canadian Expecitionary Force and died on 7th April 1918.  Charles was born on 26th August 1882 in Forglen, Banffshire, Scotland, the son of Charles and Helen Walker, who in 1901 were living in East Gamekeepers Lodge, Lonmay.  Charles being one of five children.  Charles gave his father of Bruckley Castle, Aberdeen as next of kin on his attestation papers, he also gave his occupation as that of Locomotion Engineer.  Charles had previously seem military action in Africa and India when he served for 7 years in the Gordon Highlanders,  he also stated he was a member of the Active Militia.  Charles signed his papers in a very confident and mature hand. Charles signed his papers in 1914 and was found to be 5\' 9\" tall with a 38\" chest.  He had a fair complection, gray eyes and brown hair.  It was also noted that he had had an an operation 6 years previous for  appendicitus', 'Private 2499645 Hunsgerger F served in the Canadoam Railway Troops and died on 10th April 1918 aged 18.  Fred was born on 24th June 1899 in London, Ontario, the son of Andrew Hunsberger of Weyerhaueser. Wosconsin, USA, where Fred worked as a paper maker.  Fred was 5\' 9½\" tall with a 40\" expanded chest.  He had a dark complection, blue eyes and dark hair and had a scar on the back of his right wrist.', 'Private 469855 Gasler, H C P served in the 26th Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry and die don 16th August 1917 aged 26.  Harold Charles Philip Gasler was born on 2nd June 1891 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the son of Henry Peter Gasler and his wife Sophia.  Sophia was given as Harolds next of kin as by now she was a widow living at 21 Allen St, Halifax, NS where he worked as a checker (?).  He had previously served in the 17th Canadian Field Artilliery.  Harold was 5\' 5\" tall with a 35½\" expanded chest.  He had a medium complection, brown eyes and black hair and weighed 130 lbs', 'Private 67159 Gordon A served in the 26th Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry and died on 21st June 1917.  Albert was born on 27th February 1893 in Yarmouth, NS,  the son of George whom he gave as next of kin.  Albert worked as a labourer and was a member of the Active Militia, enrolling at Yarmouth.  Albert was 5\' 4\" tall with a 34\" chest, he had a swarthy complection with brown eyes and black hair and weighed 125 lbs', 'Private 4090081 Schill L served in the Saskatchewan Regiment and died on 28th April 1918.    Lambert Schill was born on 31st May 1892 in Elmira Ontario the son of Raymond, who he gave as his next of kin.  Lambert worked as a farmer, hence the description of his complection being ruddy.  He also had blue eyes and dark brown hair and was 5\' 9\" tall with a 39\" expanded chest.', 'Private 3181449 Berryman L served in the 17th Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry and died on 9th June 1918 aged 22.  The christian name of Private Berryman differs on various documents being either Lawrence on his attestation papers and Lambert on his CWGC headstone.  Lawrence was born on 6th July 1896 in Monoton the son of Charles and Mary Berryman.  He was a singleman living with his parents at Point Tupper Richmond where he worked as a Locomotive wiper.  Charles, his father he gave as his next of kin.  He was 21 years 4 months old when he signed his Attestation Papers in a good hand.  He was described as 5\' 4½\" tall with a 34\" expanded chest, with a fair complection, blue eyes and light brown hair.', 'Serjeant 154368 Dunnicliffe, R who served in the 25th Res. Btn Canadian Inf. and died on 30th January 1917.  Reginald was born in Melbourne, Derbyshire on 29 April 1887.  In 1901 Reggie is living with his aunt and uncle and working as a brake boy, but on his attestation papers he gives his next of kin as Emma Dunnicliffe of Alma St, Melbourne, Derbyshire and his occupation as that of grocer.  He also stated he was unmarried.  He had previously served in the B C Horse and signed in a good hand with a flourish on the R and D and an unusual \'e\' on the end, more like a 3 in reverse - this was dated 13th October 1915. Reginald now comes to life when we learn that he was 5\' 6\" tall with a 35\" fully expanded girth and a 2\" extension. He had a fair complection, grey eyes and fair hair.  He also had 2 vaccination scars on his left arm and a womans head tattoed on his left forearm.', 'Private 878228 McKinnon, J served in the 193rd Bn Canadian Inf. and died on 11th January 1917 aged 19.  James was the son of Archie and Margaret McKinnon of Sydney Mines, Cape Bretton, Nova Scotia and was born on 3rd April 1899.  James worked as a miner and was single.  He signed his papers in what I would call a young, inexperienced hand on 12th April 1916.  James was aged 17 when he signed up and was 5\' 5\" tall with a 35\" chest.  He had a dark complection, Blue eyes and dark brown hair', 'Private 243615. Ste Marie S served in the 206th Bn Canadian Inf and died on 15th June 1918 aged 42.  Simeon Ste. Marie was born on 3rd April 1893, the son of Amable St Marie and Sophie Caput, his wife.  Simeon worked before enlistment as an electriction, also by the time of his enlistment he had married Mary Elizabeth.  He signed up on 29 June 1918 where he signed in a simple and neat hand. Simeon was 5\' 8\"  with a 40\" chest and a 4\" expansion.  He had a fair complection, blue eues and dark brown hair.  He had a scar on his right arm hear his elbow, small px marks on his face and a scar at the side of his mouth.', 'Private 3107960 Noel, F who served in the 10th Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry and died on 18th June 1918 aged 21.  Frank was the son of Mrs Felix Roy (formerly Noel) and was born on 1st August 1896 in Baillard, Michigan, USA, during 1918 he was residing in Canada and working as a track man.  Frank was 5\' 4½\" tall with a 35\" chest, a medium complection and brown eyes and hair.  ', 'Lieutenant Colonel McLeod, R C.  served in the Canadian Army Medical Corps and died on 4th January 1917.  Roderick Campbell McLeod was the husband of Annie who lived at Jubilee Road, Halifax, N S.', 'Private 243491 Marott J served in the 163rd Bn Canadian Inf and died on 29th December 1916.  Joseph was the son of Joseph of 723 Charleuaix ? St, Montreal and was born on 23 August 1877 and worked as a labourer.  He gave his marital status on enlistment as widower, therefore, giving his father as next of kin on 18th May 1916 when he signed in the presence of a Magistrate with a confident hand.  Joseph was 5\' 2\" tall with a 34½\" girth.  He had a fair complection, blue eyes and grey hair.  Joseph also had scars on his right shoulder, scars on his buttock and scars on the back of his right leg.  He also had tatoos on his left and right legs and also on both arms.', 'Private 63606 Guay A served in the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles and die don 23rd June 1918.  Albert was born on 12th July 1892, the son of Moses Guay of Thorncliffe, Ontario.  Albert worked before his enlistment as a farmer when he signed his attestation papers in an uneven signature, but then again, his witness W B Turnbull, Lieut, also signed in a similar way.  Albert was 23 years old when he enlisted, was 5\' 3\" tall and a 34\" girth, his colouring is not noted but it was noted that he had a small scar on his forehead.', 'Private 847658  Asselin A served in the 22nd Bn Canadian Infantry and died on 22nd July 1918 aged 31.  Albert was born in St Felix de Valais N.S. on 31st August 1888 ahd before his enlistment worked as a painter.  On his attestation papers he stated that his next of kin was his sister, Hermione and that he had previously served in the 83rd Regt for one year. Albert was 5\' 3\" tall with a 35\" chest.  His complection was given as brown and he also had brown eyes and hair.  A note does say that he had no distinctive marks and he had never been sick for the year he had been with the 83rd at 3 Rivers Camp.', 'Private 3106108 Carson, T K served in the 8th Reserve Btn Canadian Inf and died on 25th July 1918 aged 22.   Thomas King Carson was born on 26 May 1895 in Montreal but was living at the Sailors Home 422s Front St Philledelphia, PA upon enlistment.  He gave his friend Bennie Jones of Newport News Virginia USA as his next of kin and he gave his occupation as that of sailor.  He now comes to l ife again when we find that he was 5\' 7\" tall with a 37½\" girth.  He had a fair complection with blue eyes and brown hair.  Imagine him now we find that he had a snake and cross tattoo on his right forearm and flowers tattoed on his right leg.', 'Private 724248 Fitzgerald J J served in the 109th Bn Canadian Inf and died on 14th December 1916 aged 43.  John James was born in Digby Twp Victoria Co. Ontario but in April of 1916 he was living in Cobacouk ? Ontario.  John signed his enlistment papers naming his brother Thomas of Headlake as his next of kin, he also told he was a single man working as a labour and had served 1 year in the 45th Regt.  J J was 5\' 6\" tall with a 35\" girth.  He had a fair complectio, blue eyes and dark brown hair.  He has a scar of ringwork on the back of his neck and a scar on his left shin, just below his knee.', 'Private 847788 Charron O served in the 150th Canadian Inf and died on 1st December 1916.  Olivier was born on 19th February 1885 the son of Noe ? Charron.  At the time of Oliviers enlistment the family were living at 68 Bernard St Montreal.  The family must have been French speakers as his enlistment papers are in French.  Before his enlistment Olivier worked as a weaver, was a single man and had no previous military experience.  Olivier was 5\' 2\" tall had a light complection and black eyes and hair.', 'Private 148029 McDonald J E served in the 78th Canadian Inf and died on 24th November 1916.  Joseph Edward McDonald was born on 31st July 1882 in Dublin, Ireland.  On his papers he gave his next of kin as his brother James  of Sturgeon Falls, Ontario.  Joseph was serving in the 100th Winnipeg Grenadiers when he signed up for the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force on 2nd August 1915.   Joseph was taller than most of the men we have been looking at, being 5\' 10½\" tall with a 37½ \" girth.  He had  a fair complection, blue eyes and black hair.       NOTE :-  Firstly, two men shared the same no. 148029, namly William Hyor and our Joseph Edward McDonald.  An additional image informs us that a Mrs Hyor established her identity to the satisfaction of all and the Military Estate of Joseph was paid to her.  Also the identity of James McDonald, remember him, Joseph\'s brother, he was established to be William Hyor.', 'Private 2356068 Blair, William Parker served in the 4th Res Btn Canadian Inf and died on 5th August 1918 aged 22.   William was born on 15th July 1896 the son of William Parker Blair and Elizabeth of 402 East Michigan Ave, Ypsilanti, Michigan USA.  On his attestation papers he gave his mother as next of kin, his occupation as that of tailor and he stated he was single.  William was a small 21 year old when he enlisted being just 5\' 1\" tall with a fair complection, grey eyes and light brown hair.', 'Private 3083917, Roy.  Eddie Amedes served in the 20th Reserve Btn of the Canadian Infantry and died on 14 August 1918.  When Eddie attested he stated he was living at 7 Tramble St, Worcester, Mass., U.S.A and that he was a single shoemaker born on April 16 1878.  He gave his next of kin as Cesarie Roy, mother, of 5 Rice Square Worcester, Mass., U.S.A.  Eddie signed these papers on 23 April 1918.  Eddie was 5\' 3\" tall with a 34\" chest, brown eyes, a fair complection and fair hair with 20/20 vision and good hearing.', 'Pte 3204064 Coady, Patrick Augustine served in the 17th Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry and died on 28 August 1918 aged 24.  Patrick, when he signed his papers stated he was a single man working as a telegraph operator and being born in North Wiltshire.  His next of kin was given as Michael Coady, father also of North Wiltshire.  Patrick signed up in Hunter River on 23 November 1917 and he did this in a neat and confident hand.  He was noted to be 5\' 5\" tall with a 35\" chest, brown hair, blue eyes and a medium complection.', 'Private 643868, Dionne, Gilbert served in the 157th Bn Canadian Infantry and died on 18 November 1918.  Gilbert, stated before his witness J Wheatley, that he was living in Orillia, being born on 6 December 1889 and worked as a machinist.  He also stated he had previously been a member of Kinston Volunteers in 1907 and that his next if kin was Evelen, his wife.  He was found to be 5\' 9\" tall with a dark complection, brown eyes and dark brown hair and deemed fit to serve. ', 'Private 3110954, Pape, Percival John, served in the 8th Reserve Btn Canadian Inf. and died on 12 September 1918 aged 27.  Percival was born on 18 January 1889 in Toronto, the son of Joseph.  Percival was living with his parents at the time of his enlistment at 279 Woodbine Ave, Toronto and working as a gardener.  He was noted as being 5\' 5½ \" tall with a 37\" chest.  He nad a medium complection, grey eyes and medium coloured hair.  He was also noted as having a childhood vaccination mark, but was referred to the chest clinic, but found to be clear, with good vision and hearing', 'Private 3159336, Cadieux, Joseph Arthur served in the 10th Reserve Canadian Inrantry and died on 14 August 1918 aged 22.  At the time of his attestation he was living in Montreal in the home of his mother Louise and he worked as a labourer.  Joseph had a fair complection, brown eyes and fair hair.', 'Private 1031153, Joyce J T served in the 20th Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry and died on 25 September 1918 aged 40.  John Thomas Joyce was born on 2 October 1878 in Keighley, although, one source states Ovenden.John was the son of Michael and Mary.  Mary by 1891 being a widow.  Mary\'s place of birth also differs from source to source, being either Ireland or Keighley.  John Thomas at the time of his attestation was living at 67 Broomfield St, Lawrence, Mass., USA, but signed his papers in Fredricton, N B on 4 July 1917.  John stated he was from Yorkshire and his next of kin was his mother Mary of 37 Or***s St, Keighley and he worked as a machinist.  He had previously served in the 4th Btn Kings Royal Rifles and gave his marital status as that of widower.  He married in Keighley in mid 1906.  J T was 5\' 7¼\" tall with a fair complection, brown eyes and dark brown hair and a 35\" chest he had a tattoo on his left forearm, with good vision and hearing.', 'Private 1081062, Murphy J who served in the 12th Batn Canadian Infantry and died on 30 October 1916. On his attestation papers John gave his occupation at groom.  His attestation papers also tell us he was 5\' 8½\" tall with a 36 \" chest, fair complection, light blue eyes and fair hair.  He also had a tattoo on his right arm of Buffalo Bills head, a sailor, flags, butterfly etc.  His left arm had a tattoo of a ladies head, a ship and a bunch of roses.', 'Private 440553, Kane P J served in the 53rd Btn Canadian Infantry and died on 9 May 1916.  Patrick Joseph was born on 16 February 1889 in Co. Kilkenny, Ireland.  Patrick signed up on  17 September 1915 and gave his occupation as that of locomotive fireman and his mother Anastasia of Rivanagh, Culcullen, Kilkenny as next of kin.  Patrick was rather tall, at 5\' 9½\", compared to his fellow soldiers. He had a 36 0189 \" chest, a fair complection, blue eyes and brown hair.  He had a large burn mark on the front of his right leg.', 'Private 494238, Barry J J served in the 15th Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry (Saskatchewan Regiment) and died on 2 October 1918 aged 22.  John Joseph was born on 29 September 1896 in Frampton, Dorchester Co., Quebec, the son of Thomas Barry.  John was a single man working as a farmer when he signed up at Regina on 20 June 1918.  He was 5\' 7 ½\" tall, with a medium complection, grey eyes and dark brown hair.', 'Private 1030479 Osborne J W served in the 13th Bn Canadian Infantry (Quebec Reg) and died on 23 September 1918.  John William Osborne was born on 31 July 1884 in Cape Breton.  John\'s address at the time of his attestation was 9 Dartmouth Street, Boston, Mass., USA and he worked as a parachute jumper.  He gave Mrs Lottie Briggs, his sister, as his next of kin, she lived in Rockland, Mass., USA.  John was also above the normal hight of his fellow combatants being 5\' 9½\" tall and a 37\" chest. Joseph was 5\' 8\" tall with a dark complection, brown eyes and black hair.', 'Private 3233379, Hare A J served in the Canadian Field Artillery and died on 10 October 1918 aged 23.  Arthur Joseph Hare was born on 6 September 1895 in Toronto, Canada, the son of Mary Hare ( his next of kin),  On his attestation papers Arthur stated that his occupation was that of traveller.  His mother at the time was lioving at 155 De Grasse St, Toronto.  Arthur was 5\' 10¾\" tall with a 36½\" fully expanded chest.  He had a medium complection, blue eyes and brown hair.  He also had a mole on his right hip and one on his right shoulder.  He also suffered with varieoele', 'Private 3352093, Knaus W E served in the 15th Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry and died on 5 October 1918 aged 21.  William Edward Knaus was born on 2 July 1897 in Manresa, Sask, the son of William and Alice.  William was 5\' 10\" tall with a medium complection, blue eyes and dark brown hair.', 'Private 3353433 Hamelin M served in the 15th Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry and died on 4 October 1918.  Michael (Mike) was born on 23 December 1893 in Buckingham, Labella Co. Quebec, the son of Francois Savier and his wife C Landry.  Mike was 5\' 6\" tall with a fresh complection, well he was a farmer, blue eyes and brown hair.', 'Private 3259785, McCluskey J served in the 13th Reserve Btn Canadian Inf (New Brunswick Reg) and died on 17 October 1918.  John was born on 10 November 1894 in Clair, N B where he worked as a farmer.  When John signed up he gave his brother Michael of Clair, N B as his next of kin.  At Camp Sussex, N B he was found to be 5\' 6½\" tall with a fully expanded chest of 40\". He had a medium complection, blue eyes and brown hair and had one vaccination mark on his left arm.', 'Private 889590 Kelly N served in the 22nd Bn Canadian Infantry and died on 18 October 1918 aged 21.  Nazaire was born on 29 July 1896, the son of Virginie Ouelett Kelly of St Louis de Courville, Quebec. Nazaire had previously served for 7 months in the 9th Regt.  There are two sets of papers for Nazaire and one states he was a farmer and the other a goldminer but both agree with his previous service. Both sheets of his description also differ - the first give his height as 5\' 4½\" tall with a 33½ chest and a dark complection, and black hair and eyes.  The 2nd has his height as 5\' ^2 tall and a 36\" chest, with a black complection, black eyes and hair.  He now has good vision and a cicatrix on his right hand.     Which of the two describes Nazaire ??', 'Private 2245960 Cotey W J served in the Canadian Forestry Corps and died on 13 October 1918 aged 22.    William John Cotey was born on 30 September 1895 in Boston, Mass., USA.  On his attestatiion papers William gave his current address as 24 w 5th St, Boston, Mass and his next of kin was Catherine Cotey, his stepmother.  William worked as a teamster and was unmarried.  He also stated he had previously served as a Capt., in the USA for 2½ years.  He was measured to be 5\' 5\" tall, with an fair complection, blue grey eyes and fair hair.  He was also found to have flat feet,possibly why he left  the US army and being put in the forestry corps', 'Private 3162053 Bedard A served in the 16th Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry (British Colombian Regt) and died on 17 October 1918.  Antoine was born on 18 February 1897 in Montreal, he was the son of Napoleon Bedard who in 1918 was living at 669 Marie Ann St, Montreal.  Antoine before joining the army worked as a butcher.  He was 5\' 3\" tall and a32 \" chest.  He had a medium complection, blue eyes and brown hair with no distinctive marks.', 'Private 3203476, Rowe J served in the 21st Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry (Alberta Regt) and died on 21 October 1918.      No further information can be found.', 'Private 267720 Fisher G served in the 214th Btn Canadian Infantry and died on 21 October 1918.  George was born on 25 July 1899 in Duck Lake, Saskatchewan. George gave his current address as that of Jack Fish Lake, Sask. where he worked as a farmer.  He was 5\' 7½\" tall with a fully expanded chest of 37\".  He had a dark complection, hazel eyes and black hair, he also had a brown pigmentation mark on his left arm.', 'Private 3255853 Le Blanc F served in the 13th Reserve Btn Canadian Inf (New Brunswick Regt) and died on 20 October 1918 aged 21.  Felicien was born on 28 February 1896 at Fox Creek Mt Moncton, NB the son of Livain and Isabelle.  Felicien worked as a farmer and carpenter before signing his papers at St John NB on 21 January 1918.  He was found to be 5\' 7\" tall with a medium complection, blue eyes and dark hair.', 'Private 3106060 Barraclough P served in the Canadian Infantry, Central Ontario Regiment and died on 22 October 1918 aged 40.  Parker was born on 1 September 1880 the son of James and Susan Barraclough.  Sources differ to his place of birth, one gives Bradford, Yorkshire and another states Glasgow, Scotland.  Both do agree that he was married to Mary E Barraclough who around 1918 lived at 254 Harrison St, Jamestown, New York USA.  He was 5\' 4½ \" tall with a fair complection, grey eyes and fair hair.  He also had a mole at the base of his spine and a tattoo of flags and wreath on his left forearm and he also had a bracelet scar on his upper hip', 'Private 4061926 Doucet P served in the 13th Reserve Btn Canadian Inf., New Brunswick Regt. Philip was born on 14 January 1889 in St Alexis, Quebec.  He worked before enlistment as a labourer.  His wife, Justine was given as his next of kin, she lived at Allandale, North Co. NB.  Philip on his papers stated that he had previously served for 2 ½ months in the 55th Battalion.  Philip was rather small, being 5\' 2\" and a 35\" fully expanded chest.  He had a dark complection and black hair and eyes.', 'Private 3384383 Grenier A served in the 10th Reserve Btn Canadian Infantry, Quebec Regt.  Amedee was born on 28 January 1893 in St Adelaide, de Pabos, P.Q., Canada, the son of Jules and Suzanne. Amedee was 5\' 5\" tall with a medium complection, brown eyes and black hair. ' );
